How RenewU Works

The 10 evidence-based interventions are organized by Mind and Body. The Mind evidence-based interventions are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & Mindfulness, Emotional Freedom Therapy, Emotional Intelligence, and Psychological Detachment. The Body evidence-based interventions are Active Rest, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Physical Activity, Sleep and Yoga. The 10 interventions included in this toolkit have a well-established body of research evidence supporting their effectiveness in managing and/or protecting against anxiety, depression, and burnout, while also promoting wellness and building resilience.

The Purpose of RenewU

The individual modules provide an opportunity to learn more about practicing the evidence-based intervention and sample practice activities. The RenewU resources for teams include workshop templates, facilitators guide, PowerPoints and handouts with activities for participants. Organizations can see model programs currently being utilized or find expert recommendations for implementing any of the 10 evidence-based interventions at an organizational level.

The Need for RenewU

The U.S. is facing a critical healthcare worker shortage, with a 2022 Definitive Healthcare report revealing that 20% left the workforce in 2020, and up to 47% might leave by 2025. The 2020 trend continued into 2021-2022, with over 145,000 healthcare professionals departing. High stress levels persist among the workforce, exacerbated by pre-2020 issues like burnout and mental health challenges. RenewU research in 2022 found 69% of healthcare professionals and 79% of students reporting significant stress. Factors contributing to the workforce shortage and compromised wellness within the healthcare workforce are both systemic and personal. RenewU offers an multi-implementation approach, providing evidence-based interventions targeting all levels of the health care system, the individual, team, students, and organization.

The Intended Impact

The RenewU goal is to provide easy access to evidence-based interventions that are targeted to specific users, that can be quickly reviewed and that provides users with progressive activities for practice, implementation and integration. We believe this model of renewing one’s self, team, students, and organization can lead to a holistic and systemic shift toward embedding wellness practices in the healthcare system and adopting “wellbeing” as a cultural value in health professional training and practice.
